Trick and Treat?

Is it strange that even as an adult you still have a childlike sense of joy as you experience your first 'pumpkin sighting' of the season?
Unpacking the dusty boxes containing porcelain ghosts, skull candle holders, purple and orange lights, and the elegant glass pumpkins evokes a special feeling. The scent of sweets fills the air as you open the first bag of candy corn, a treat that I've come to learn is quite controversial 😂. A moment of pure joy.
I absolutely love this time of year. I’d dare anyone to find a season that mixes so elegantly joy and fright into a time that everyone can enjoy. Of course, in my household, there is a constant battle about which “Halloween” movie to watch (scary or fun)…I will say that I am victorious most of the time. (List provided for your viewing pleasure)
My love for this season is deeply routed in my experiences as a child. I can still smell the fresh pumpkins piled from floor to ceiling in the basement. Vibrant hues of orange and yellow, with a slight speck of green as the stems popped out of the pile creating a beautiful collage of fall colors. My family were serious pumpkins carvers. The books of patterns scattered across the floor, Pumpkin Masters tool kits galore, and my Dad feverishly cleaning out the pumpkins so the next one could be carved. All the while the scent of freshly baked pumpkins seeds wafted from the kitchen. Yes. Without a doubt this was (and still is) my Dad’s favorite part about the holiday…the house overflowing with pumpkins seeds. Never mind that he was really the only one that ate them. But lord help the person who tried to throw any away. It was a magical event filled with joy, laughter, and the occasional carving mishap. 😉
The joy of the season and the freedom to just be yourself in whatever form that comes in, truly is worth recognizing. I encourage every single person to carve a pumpkin this year, whether it’s your first time or your 100th time. Make it your own, and bring a little joy to yourself and those around you.
Here are a few I’ve done over the years to spark a bit of inspiration and imagination. Enjoy!!
